John Sullivan Ad Fact Check

Recently I saw an ad for John Sullivan that says that Democrat Georgianna Oliver recently moved to Tulsa and only very recently registered to vote. So I thought I'd check those claims.

I accessed the voter registration records and found that the she registered to vote on Jan 8, 2008, and has only voted once (on Feb 5th, 2008). Sullivan's voter registration claim is correct.

As to when she moved here; I took the address from her voter registration and ran that through Zillow. According to Zillow her house was last sold on 08/02/2007, I confirmed this with the land records office at Tulsa County. So this claim seems to be correct as well.

Compare that with Sullivan.
I show that he last registered to vote on Jan 4th, 1988 and has voted 76 times. According to Zillow, he has owned his current home for over 10 years.

Another interesting comparison is to look at where their money is coming from. According to Opensecrets.org, not only does Oliver's out-of-state campaign contributions eclipse Sullivan's, but Oliver has received more money from outside Oklahoma than she has from within. What is really funny is the small section at the bottom of the graph in the above link explaining how understand the data.

As a general rule, incumbents get more out-of-state money than challengers, a reflection of their status as members of Congress and the wider circles in which they travel. Challengers and newcomers are rarely well known outside their state, so their ability to raise funds beyond their district is more limited.
So why does this election buck the general rule of out-of-state donations? Why did Oliver just move to Tulsa, and why did she just register to vote? Because Oliver is clearly a carpetbagger.

John Sullivan has served us well in Congress. I get weekly updates on his votes in congress through congress.org. With one or two possible exceptions, I've never been upset with his votes in congress; and certainly, on the really important issues, I've never been disappointed with his votes.

On November 4th, I'm voting for Sullivan.

Excellent job on the research.

A site that I have found to be very useful lately is OnTheIssues. They have unbiased rating and voting records for all US politicians past and present.

My advice: Ignore all the campaign ads and get the facts for yourself.

Roemerman,
It is true, she moved to Tulsa last year after living in D.C., but you are completely discounting the ENTIRE REASON she moved to D.C. in the first place. Georgianna moved to D.C. because her business needed to be positioned close to Housing and Urban Development national headquarters, along with many organizations associated with multi-family residential living. The reason she was so passionate about getting this company off the ground: SO THAT SHE COULD BRING HIGH PAYING JOBS TO OKLAHOMA! She did what it took to ensure that in her homestate, the place that she loves, that there were highly skilled people willing to stay in-state. Look at her roster, hometowns such as Picher, Skiatook, Muskogee, Broken Arrow, Stillwater, Tulsa, and that's just to name a few. John Sullivan watched as CITGO marched down to Texas, while Georgianna Oliver created high-paying jobs to benefit Oklahoma. She is no carpet-bagger, just a woman who relocated for a time so that her business could benefit Oklahoma in the most influential way possible.

Patrick, I was born and raised in Dallas. I still have in my heart very special feelings for Texas and for Dallas. But I haven't lived there in over ten years. I haven't voted in their elections, I haven't watched the local TV or radio, I don't know my old home town anymore. If I decided to move back and run for office, I'd be a carpetbagger. Just like Georgianna. She may originally be from here, she may even love Tulsa, but she she hasn't been a resident, and that makes her what...anyone...anyone? Yes, a carpetbagger.

There was absolutely nothing Sullivan or any other Tulsan could have done to keep Citgo from moving to Houston. Except maybe to convince the 100s of other oil related companies centered in Houston to move to Tulsa. I'd vote for that person.

Steven,
If you even had a clue about the real Georgianna "Buffy" Oliver, you wouldn't even dare suggest she is not a real Oklahoman. She is a card carrying "Choctaw" and Oklahoma will always be her home. She owned other houses in Tulsa, but you should already know that.

I believe you are incorrect in stating John Sullivan's home for 10 years. He bought his home at 44th for $157,000 and tore it down and built a 6841 square foot monster mansion with 7 full baths and 5 half baths per the court house on a $152,000 a year salary. No wonder he sleeps on the floor in DC.
Four arrest records for John Sullivan in his life. One time is too many. Just because he blankets himself with a Bible and a cross does not make him a decent person. If you vote for Sullivan, you will get what you deserve, another term with good ole boy mentality and no respect for women or other races, but that might be what you are looking for. If you looked as hard at John Sullivan's past as you did Georgianna's, I am surprised you would vote for him at all.
