While some are excited about the start of football season, I find myself more exited about the start of pomegranate season; I love fresh Pomegranates. The season typically starts in September and extends to January.
I spoke to a representative from POM Wonderful, a large US grower and I think the producer of the best pomegranates in the county, and was told that the start of the season will be slightly late this year. I was told that they won’t even think about starting their harvest for at least another week, and that we should expect to see Pomegranates hit the shelves by the end of this month, or perhaps even at the beginning of October. I can’t wait.

Looks pretty confusing. Perhaps a short tutorial on eating/using these would be of some help.
Anon, Last year the Happy Housewife marked the start of the season with instructions and recipe ideas. link here.
Sooooooo delish...I can't wait for these either.
It's time for pomegranate seed fight time!
We have purchased a pomegrante but are unsure whether it is ripe. What should we look for to let us know the fruit is ready to be opened?
The ATA's
I don't think they sell them unless they are ready to open...they ripen on the vine.
Sigh. I love pomegranates too, but there's one thing about them that is not common knowledge but is very well supported by studies: just like grapefruit, they interfere significantly with the metabolism of a LOT of drugs, such as cyclosporin and the statins (for high cholesterol), Tegretol (for epilepsy), Quetiapine (atypical antipsychotic), and the list goes on and on. I so wish this was more widely known. The consequences can be devastating for people on these drugs.
