Perhaps it’s because I’ve spent a lot of time around farm animals, or perhaps it’s because I’m cheap, or perhaps I don’t like paying for something I can do myself*. Whatever the reason, I’ve recently delved into the world of do-it-yourself pet vaccination. (*probably it’s a little of all three)
There is a little feed store in East Tulsa where, for about 12 bucks a dog, I can vaccinate both my pups. The rabies vaccine even comes with a tag complete with serial number! Couple that with do-it-yourself laboratory tests for heart worms, and online stores where I can buy medicine, I may never go to a vet again!

It might be a good idea to let a licensed vet give the rabies shot, to satisfy liability requirements should your dog bite someone. Just a thought!
It's been a few years but when I was doing this the city wouldn't reconize a rabies vacine from an unlicensed vet.
Steve..FYI
I don't find 1-800-petmeds to be that cost effective when compared to a local place - Southern Agriculture. There is one located at 31st and Mingo ..just down the street from where you live . 800meds has frontline top spot for my dog (7 lbs) for $37.99 and SA has it for $36.99. Heartgard is $22.49 at 800meds and $23.99 at SA. Of course there is shipping at 800meds if you don't purchase at least $39 worth of stuff.
There is a vet at SA once a week for approx $15 an office call. Plus there is a vacination clinic once a week for a very nominal cost. Seems like the shots you reference are $15-$17 per dog (maybe less). A lot cheaper than Woodland (did you bring your checkbook) Animal clinic. Of course Woodland does the serious stuff but why would one want to pay their prices for the simple stuff like vacination shots.
Well, the $12 bucks is more than just the rabies...the rabies by it's self was only $6.
And I don’t think SA will give you heart worm medicine over the counter.
yup, you're right. But you just go one time and let the in-house vet look at your doggies and thereafter all the heartworm med you want is over the counter. They keep your telephone and doggie names in their database. I’m not suggesting you change to SA only pointing out a reasonable alternative. I choose SA over 800meds because to me it makes pretty good sense and I am supporting a local east Tulsa business without much (if any) sacrifice to my checkbook. Besides, I have found the folks at SA to be very friendly and helpful. The attendants there have numerous pets of their own and truly care about animal health. Call me old fashion but I think that kind of business is worth supporting.
Steve, you are right. If you have a vet give your pet a rabies vac. and it bites some one they will take it and isolate (quarantine) it for about two weeks without or with a vaccanation. So do as you think right for you. You may even want to call animal health but this happened to a neighbor and she was very upset about having to pay a vet for kenneling her pet.
I grew up on the farm and we never spent the money on heartguard etc. Just get some of that cattle Ivermectin wormer. Figure about .009 CC per lb for your dog and your good to go. Mind you, that's if you get the 1% Ivermectin. See http://www.adoptarott.net/heartworm.html for the details.
Don't you need a veterinarian prescription for heartworm preventative?
