Leading My Eyes

In Job 31, Job makes two very statements. He suggests that his eyes do not wonder where they should not because his eyes have a covenant with his heart, that the eyes follow the heart. (Verse 1 and 7).

Jesus told us that out the mouth the heart speaks. Also, apparently, the eyes gaze on what heart desires them to.

The common wisdom is that our eyes get us in to trouble. “Oh be careful little eyes what you see,” because we might fall into sin. It can seem as if our heart merely follows our eyes, but the truth is our eyes don’t lead us into trouble, our heart does. Indeed Jesus says that if we lust in our hearts it is as if we have already committed adultery.

I’ve always been taught that if my eye strays and if I have a lustful thought, I haven’t sinned if I don’t dwell on it. Now I’m not so sure. I think that kind of logic is furthered because it is hard to reconcile Jesus’ words with our nature. “Well I can’t control my eyes! How can I be held accountable for every stay look and stray thought?"

According to Job, our eyes won’t stray if our heart has not commanded them to. If we have committed our self and our hearts then our eyes, our thoughts, and our mouth will follow…

yea, good point. Like it says in Matthew 18:8
And if your hand or your foot causes you to offend, cut them off and throw them from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

Now, I'm not saying go maim yourself, but we have to ALWAYS be on guard to the things in our lives.
