McCombs Cemetery

Geocaching takes you to places that you might not ever visit, which is one of the things I like about it. Yesterday, my father and I found a cache hidden in McCombs Cemetery (N 33° 01.728 W 097° 02.192).

The McCombs Cemetery dedicated perhaps as early as 1855--one year before Denton was selected as county seat---is among the oldest in Denton County. The individuals interred are early settlers who are highly representative of the pioneer history of Denton County. Groups of rugged individuals made their way in ox-drawn wagons from Tennessee to Texas and settled on adjoining land for protection from Indians and marauders. Some infants and young men and women died from the elements and likely disease. There were early widows who buried their loved ones on farmland, gave birth to first generation Texans and remained to work the land far from the life they had known.
In 1993, developers bulldozed the cemetery while local neighborhood activists were in the early stages of trying to protect it. The headstone of an infant left the only reaming visible evidence of the cemetery after the destruction. With the help of archaeologists, the local citizens were able to prove that the ground was a cemetery and were able to halt further destruction. In 1997, The State of Texas recognized the site as a historical landmark.

Family Reunion

We are in North Texas for a family reunion. I’m visiting relatives I have not seen in over a decade…This I’m sure is a big shock for them. The last time they saw me I was a strapping young man with lots of hair. Now I’m all grown up, and out, and bald...(sigh) I am having a good time, it is great to see the clan and yak it up.
We have big plans for the day. We plan to make, and eat, homemade ice cream. We will take a boat out on Lake Lewisville. At some point, I plan to search for a
geocache.

A new floor

I finally tiled the bathroom floor. My wife has asked me to tile the bathroom for at least two or three months now.

This is the first time I have tiled a floor all by my self. I think I did a fairly decent job. The area just under the toilet, by the drain, is not pretty. However, because the toilet will cover that area, no one will see it. I am largely happy with the outcome. All that is left is to wait for the grout to dry, clean the floor, and put the toilet back.

TOLL BRIDGE MEETING

Monday July 25, 2005 7 PM
St. James Methodist Church
5050 E.111th Street (between Yale & Sheridan)
SPEAKERS
District 8 City Councilor ~ Bill Christiansen
STCC Spokesperson ~ Michael Covey

The purpose of this meeting is to inform the public of the facts regarding the current status of the proposed toll bridge at 121st and Yale. Despite what you may have read in the Tulsa World regarding the Mayor and City Council’s opposition to the toll bridge, the County of Tulsa and Infrastructure Venture I, L.L.C. are still attempting to build the bridge at 121st and Yale.
(On July 15th there were surveyors surveying 121st and Yale)

Mr. Covey and Councilor Christiansen will make brief opening remarks. They will be followed by a question and answer session.

Bring your questions & PLEASE attend this very important meeting.

Visit the South Tulsa Citizens Coalition (STCC) website for the latest information regarding the toll bridge.

Citizens Call for Toll Bridge Investigation

The following is a press release from the South Tulsa Citizens Coalition:

The South Tulsa Citizens Coalition (“STCC”) requested a detailed financial analysis of the Toll Bridge Agreement made between Tulsa County and Infrastructure Venture I, L.L.C. (“IVI”). The financial analysis was prepared by George K. Baum & Company, Inc. (“GKB”), a leading investment banking firm in the area of transportation finance.

The analysis concludes that IVI will net $658 Million in profit with the County only receiving $133 Million over the life of the agreement. If the County had chosen to “publicly finance” this bridge, over 75 years the total net revenue to the County would have been $800 Million. If the County chose to stop collecting tolls on the bridge once it was paid for, the bridge would be free after 30 years at a total cost of only $35 Million plus financing costs.

STCC spokesperson, Michael Covey, said “This is an outrage. Is there no leadership at the County level looking out for the interests of the taxpayers? The 75 year IVI agreement soaks the citizens of Tulsa County out of over half a billion dollars more than is needed to build this bridge, and of that money the County Commissioners gave away $658 Million to their buddies. I am calling for an investigation into the Tulsa County Commissioners handling of this bridge. We either have an abuse of power, or financial incompetence, and neither is good for the taxpayers, or toll payers of Tulsa!”

Geocaching

Ok I just discovered a fun game called Geocaching. What is Geocaching you ask?

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.
I just found my first cache at N 36° 07.432 W 095° 50.942.

I can see how this could become addicting…

Welcome, another Okie Blogger

Another one of my friends has started a blog. CryKeyGen is his third attempt; I think he has finally found a recipe that suits him, and more importantly one that suits his wife...

My new toy

I’m having good time playing with my new toy, a Garmin etrex Legend handheld GPS. It comes with the ability to pick up the WAAS (wide area augmentation system) signal. WAAS sends corrected location information for the GPS satellites, which in turn provides for a more accurate fix with a GPS unit. The most accurate reading I have received to-date was with in 7 feet of accuracy! Right now, sitting at my kitchen table I’m getting 27 feet of accuracy.

I have enjoyed playing with the built in maps, creating navigation routes, and marking waypoints. For example, at last Thursdays City Council meeting I marked city hall at N 36 degrees 09’ 00.7” by W 95 degrees 59’ 44.1”

So I no longer have to rest on the old adage, “Where ever you go, there you are.” I now always know where I am, with in 7-27 feet.

No Toast for Sullivan

I had planed to attend tonight’s city council meeting to show support for Councilors Mautino and Medlock before I had heard the idea of bringing a piece of toast for Sullivan. Last year about the time the recall effort started, Councilor Randy Sullivan called Councilor Chris Medlock and with slurred speech informed Chris, “You're Toast”.

So I figured, “Hey why not? I’ll support Jim and Chris and stick it to Randy at the same time.” I arrived at the meeting tonight with my toast, and had almost decided to keep it in my bag when Michael Bates showed up with a few pieces of his own toast. I have a lot of respect for Bates; I decided that if he brought toast then I would go ahead and wave it in the air at old Randy Sullivan. Alas, we who brought toast were disappointed, as he did not attend tonight’s meeting.

I’m sure the thought of facing Jim and Chris and having toast waived at him was too much…ohh well, maybe next week.

VICTORY!!!

The citizens of Tulsa, district 2 and 6 turned out the vote in large numbers and overwhelmingly rejected recall. They saw through the dirty tactics and lies and decided to keep Medlock and Mautino.

I cannot help but think that the good ol’ boy network suffered a double defeat tonight. As I alluded to last night, the people of Tulsa have started to wake up. We will not suffer the good ol’ boy network any longer, but they will suffer us.

Tonight’s victory would not have been possible with out the hard work of a new community of Tulsa citizens who are standing up for what is right. From KFAQ, to The Tulsa Beacon, to Councilor Jack Henderson and Councilor Roscoe Turner, to normal every day citizens: we have all banded together and rejected recall. It is a great day for Tulsa!

Tonight's Rally

Tonight’s anti-recall rally was great. There were hundreds of people from all over the city present to show their support for Medlock and Mautino. It was heartening to see all the support and it makes me feel optimistic about tomorrow. I hope we win this election and I hope that these two great men have the opportunity to continue to serve Tulsa as city councilors. Win or lose, I hope the shadowy conspirators that want to hurt Tulsa receive the following message:

The sleeping giant has awoken. The people of this town are opening their eyes to see the good ol’ boy network for what it is; a group of men and women that have their interest ahead of the interests of Tulsa. In trying to recall these two good men, you have exposed yourselves and we will not forget; we will not forget what you tried to do to this city and we will not forget who you are. Your days of control in this town are numbered!

As a side note: I saw meeciteewurkor there with his camera. He took some good pictures. (I know who he is, but I will never tell...)

Justis is on the Phone

My wife just got a recorded call from former, district 6, Tulsa City Councilor Art Justis encouraging us to vote in the upcoming recall election. Justis explained why he supported the recall. He listed the same tired reasons, or as I like to call them, “lies.”

Art Justis was not one-eighth the councilor that Jim is. Councilor Mautino is an honest man who loves Tulsa and works hard for his constituents. He is fair, knowledgeable, thoughtful, dedicated, and trustworthy.

Oh by the way, did I mention that if the recall is successful, there won’t be an election to replace Jim? The city council will pick whoever they want to fill the post. The absolute last thing we need is another councilor like Art Justis.

Thank you for the reminder to vote, Art. I definitely will be voting on July 12, but it will not be to recall Councilor Mautino. I will vote against recall.

Biased World

Robert E. Lorton gave $2,500 to support the recall, surprise surprise. If you still have doubts that the Tulsa World is a biased publication, then you are living in a fairytale land.

On a related note, I was tempted to buy today’s edition so I could read the World's slant on the London bombings. However, I could not bring my self to part with 50 cents. A kind co-worker who wanted to buy a paper for the sports page, gave me the editorial section.

...make no mistake Thursday’s bombings had more to do with Iraq than with the G8 or the fact that London on Wednesday was named as the site for the 2012 Olympics.
There is a danger that Thursday’s bloody attacks will further weaken resolve among British citizens when it comes to partnering with the U.S in Iraq. And so there is a danger that the U.S. might become a coalition of one in the Middle East
What? I think the World underestimates the British. They are not going to pull out of the coalition. If anything, this attack will strengthen their resolve, not weaken it. Also I’m confused about the last statement. “…the U.S might become a coalition of one…”

So Afghanistan + Albania + Angola + Australia + Azerbaijan +Bulgaria + Colombia + Costa Rica + Czech Republic + Denmark + Dominican Republic + El Salvador + Eritrea + Estonia + Ethiopia + Georgia + Honduras + Hungary + Iceland + Italy + Japan + Kuwait + Latvia + Lithuania + Macedonia + Marshall Islands + Micronesia + Mongolia + Netherlands + Nicaragua + Palau + Panama + Philippines + Poland + Portugal + Romania + Rwanda + Singapore + Slovakia + Solomon Islands + South Korea + Spain + Turkey + Uganda + Ukraine + United States +
Uzbekistan - United Kingdom = a coalition of one? That is some interesting math the Tulsa World uses…

The people already had their right to vote. They did so in the last city council election, and they will have the right to do so again in the elections of 2006. If you gave money for recall, then you support recall. By giving money you have in effect said, "We don't like Mautino and Medlock; we want them out of office. Damn the folks that voted for them in the last election, they clearly don't know any
better."

Why would I want to do business with an organization that feels that way? Good luck to you.

Thanksgiving in July

As I sit in my house without air-conditioning I find that I’m thankful for many things:

  1. There is such a thing as air-conditioning.
  2. The last few days have been relatively mild.
  3. My cars have air-conditioning.
  4. With the windows up and the fan running, I felt cold as I slept last night.
  5. I live a life of comfort, and a few days of discomfort reminds me what I have to be thankful for.
  6. I have a refrigerator filled with ice, water, ice cream, and cokes.
  7. That I have running water and a shower to wash the sticky sweaty feeling I get from being uncomfortable.
  8. My neighbor knows an air-conditioning guy who is honest, reliable, nice, and reasonable.
  9. Tomorrow I’ll have a brand new system with 5 years parts and warranty, which will be more efficient, and will be one less thing I’ll have to worry about.

Honest people

There are still honest people in the world. Of course I knew that, but it’s nice to get confirmation. On the 3rd, my family and I went to Rhema to see their fireworks display. On that note, let me say that they put on a great fireworks show. If we are in town for the 4th we will make Rhema part of our celebration from now on.

Just before the fireworks started I noticed that I lost my mobile phone. I re-traced my steps but could not find it. I was sure I knew where I dropped it so I focused my search, but to no avail. My wife persuaded me to forget about it and enjoy the show, “You can come back when it is light and you might find it. Or someone might find it.” I decided to take her advice, and I ‘m glad I did. Like I said before it was a great show.

That night at about 2:00 a huge storm blew in, and all my hopes of finding it in the morning were dashed. I was certain I lost it as I jumped over a stream. Even if the rain did not ruin it, it was sure to be swept away.

The next morning, my suspicions seemed to be confirmed when I called my phone and it whet straight to voice mail. However, not to long after I had given up hope I got a call from Wendy. She informed me that she had found my phone. If you don’t have “Home” programmed into your phone I suggest you add it now before you lose it. Wendy’s husband had found my phone not to long after I lost it and right where I thought I’d lost it.
Thank you Rhema for having a family friendly celebration of our Nation’s independence, and thank you Wendy for returning my phone and reminding me there are honest people among us.

Happy Anniversary

My wife and I have been married for 7 years today!

Early into our freshman year, I met Stacey at our college cafeteria. I was able to flirt my way to the lunch table with her and her roommate. Obviously, our first encounter did not make a big impression on her, as she does not remember it. It is probably just as well, I was a clumsy flirt. I was very excited to eat lunch with two very attractive, sophisticated, college girls. Immediately afterward, I told my roommate about my encounter with Stacey and her roommate. I probably said something like, “Dude, I just ate lunch with two hot chicks!” To which I’m sure he replied, “Nice!”

When dealing with roommates, ultimately, one must choose which one to pursue; once you have made your choice, it is somewhat difficult to change your mind. To complicate matters, my roommate felt entitled to date one or the other. We spent the better part of a month trying to decide which one we like best. I decided on Stacey and he pursued her roommate.

My roommate had quicker and more dramatic results with his choice, but ultimately things did not work out between them. After a quick courtship, he took a page from the “Steven book of dating” and broke up with her by never calling her again…Probably not a good idea.

Luckily, for me, by my junior year I had thrown out or re-written most of the pages in that book. Stacey and I started dating seriously and by my senior year, we became engaged.

It is hard to believe that I have been married for 7 years. We have had such a good time creating a life and family together, I am looking forward to the next 7 years.

****Update***
My wife wanted a chance to post her version
----------------------------
I first became aware of Steven in college through my roommate. She had begun hanging out with some random new guys and I was initially unimpressed. However, their crazy antics and instant loyalty eventually won me over. I dated Steven a few times, but we settled into a playful friendship.

What I would like to share with you a story that has become family lore, and Steven is probably tired of hearing it, but it’s a beautiful moment when you realize who you want to share the rest of your life with and this is mine.

I had been casually dating a gentleman already out of college and established in the local business community. He had amazing connections and no shortage of exciting events to attend. With this man, I had attended luncheons with Justice Clearance Thomas and Newt Gingrich and a private dinner party with Attorney General John Ashcroft. One beautiful evening we were returning from the theatre and he was dropping me off at my dorm when a small group of people walked past us. Steven was there in a yellow Cheerios t-shirt, barefoot, turning somersaults as he went by. I stared out the window completely ignoring my date, and I just wanted to be with Steven, forever. I still feel the same way.

***Update***

I spoke with someone today, whom I trust to be wise in these matters, whose first reaction to this news was disbelief. He thought that the real purpose of this poll was to determine LaFortune's viability in the next election and that Bartlett was “just a smoke screen.” I guess we will have to wait and see.
