I am not entirely sure what "District of Choice" is supposed to mean, but that is what is on the Tulsa Public School home page. Perhaps it refers to the students who attend one of the 38 failing Tulsa schools and their choice to attend a different school elsewhere in the district.
Anyway, I digress. This was supposed to be a post about the school bond package. I am not sure where I stand on this yet. Hopefully there will be some detailed analysis from Bates or Tulsa Chiggers. Until then, here is the official line from TPS…
If approved the bond package will provide:
• $116.4 million for facilities
• $9.7 million for library improvements
• $29.6 million for textbooks and technology
• $6.5 million for transportation

I like the way these numbers get itemized.
$29.6 million - Textbooks and Technology.
Hmm, is that $29 Million for Technology and $0.6 Million for textbooks?
The wording of these leaves a lot to be desired. As it is, they could buy a single book.
"Technology" could mean anything from launching their own satellite to putting rollers on trash cans.
It looks like most of that 29 million is tech, but there are some books in the mix.
* New textbooks for all students
* New music and art equipment including musical instruments, sinks, kilns, auditorium seats and other equipment to support newly expanded programs in all schools
* Reading resource materials for all elementary schools
* Science lab and safety equipment for all secondary schools; 11 new middle school labs
* New physical education and health equipment for all schools
* New computers and learning technology for all schools
* Technology improvements to support learning and improve efficiency, district-wide
* Shared video and digital curriculum materials to support instruction, district-wide
I don't know...at this point it is kinda late to complain about the contents of the package...and I'm not sure I'm prepared to deny TPS bond money. I guess I'll vote for the package.
You can spend all the money you like on government education and it will still be little but an instrument of indoctrination, only with better tools.
About two weeks ago I received a phone survey asking me how I felt about certain school bond issues. I just see so much miss spending in the schools today that I just can't comprehend giving them more money to waste. The kids need books. I have a student who is a senior and is not allowed to bring books home to study because there are not enough to go around. What happened to all the books? I know they get lost and are not replaced , but honestly people shouldn't we replace books before we buy new buses. It's like paying your electric , water, gas and phone bill but not your house payment. If you don't have a roof over your head..........do you need electric? Why are we building new buildings and new labs when we can't even pay the teachers a decent salary or supply them with the tools they need to teach. I will vote on a bond for books and that's it. BTW the other day a parent told me that her HS student had to do a power point presentation for a class.......she does not own a computer. This is a single Mom working two jobs and raising three kids which are honor students. Maybe we should go back to the basics. Just a thought.
