Checkers, the Roemerman family dog since 1988, died yesterday. The Poodle/Lhasa Apso mix provided us with a wealth of memories over the past seventeen years. On balance, Checkers was a good dog, but every once and awhile he was a terror. It is interesting how our memories of his more troubling behavior, when viewed through the lens of time, end up as fond memories. We can look back and laugh at the time he ruined two of my father’s Armani suits because a chocolate mint was left in the pocket, or the time he ate my squirrel tail, a trophy from my first hunting experience. We can laugh at the time Checkers got into and ate all our Christmas candy, or how he would bite my father’s feet every morning when my father kissed my mother on his way to work.
It is funny how we let animals into our house and into our hearts, and how they become a part of the family. We love them despite their faults and miss them when they are gone. We will miss the way he enjoyed cuddling on the couch and how he seemed to comfort us when we were sick. We will miss him because he was a good dog.

"We love them despite their faults"
thats how God views us...
I'm sorry for your loss... we lost our first pet a little over 3 years ago, proclaimed by the vet to be the meanest cat he has ever seen, yet he was just "playfull" around us...
Hello Steven,
I too, am sorry for your loss. May I offer this prayer for your family? I feel it speaks to the issue at hand, and I can see that your family has enjoyed the time given to you with Checkers.
Creator God, You have made us, our pets, and all living things. You are even more wonderful than the things You have made. We thank You for giving us these pets who give us joy. As You take care of us, so also we ask that we might take care of our pets who trust us to take care of them. By doing this, we share in Your own love for all creation.
Your goodness is turned upon every living thing and Your grace flows to all Your creatures. Help this family to not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in Your goodness, and strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
You might be interested to know that in the my tradition, on the Feast day of St. Francis, we bring our pets to church for a blessing. A friar with brown robe and white cord often welcomes each animal with a special prayer, and blessing on the pet as well as it's family. It is a day when we remember that God also made the animals and He loves them as well.
† May God, Who created the animals of this earth as a help to us, continue to protect and sustain us with the grace His blessing brings, now and forever.
AMEN
